Jai Makokha is a Learning and Development Specialist at MMI who is passionate about helping people understand the everyday and complex financial challenges Americans face in a way that is personal, relatable, and appropriate for each audience. In his role at MMI, Jai facilitates and oversees training for MMI’s credit counselors. He is skilled in making dense subject matter relatable and humanizing financial topics. Also a screenwriter, blogger, and content creator, Jai focuses on capturing the Black and Brown queer experience in a way that highlights the breadth and power of our diversity.

Before joining the organization in 2019, Jai worked in the public health field, coordinating community-based adult health efforts in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. His focus, then, was developing new partnerships in addressing health disparities in marginalized communities. From churches to educational institutions, Jai worked to bring new voices into conversation about tough topics in hopes of finding community-based solutions.

Jai has spoken on LGBTQ Issues for People of Color at the University of North Texas, as a spokesperson for the Greater Than AIDS “Speak Out Texas” campaign, and served on the Ryan White Planning Council of the Dallas Area. He has contributed to MMI public events, including LGBTQ Financial Wellness for Pride Month and reducing debt stigma through Peer Advocacy.

Jai’s areas of expertise include asset building, credit education, debt reduction, and People of Color and LGBTQ financial wellness, while his overall goal is to help individuals and families reach their next financial goal.
