The primary reason struggling homeowners don't seek help (and how to avoid it!)

Protect your home

By Jessica Horton, Copywriter

Homeowners face real concerns when considering who to turn to for help with mortgage troubles, according to a recent Money Management International (MMI) housing survey.

MMI conducted a national housing survey to learn what actions homeowners would take if they were struggling with mortgage payments. Survey respondents said they would first seek help from family or friends (50 percent), followed by their lender (26 percent), then from housing counseling or a mortgage relief program (13 percent).

But when asked about concerns regarding available options for mortgage assistance, the majority of survey respondents answered with a reason that has been acknowledged by the FBI as a growing problem across the country. So what is this valid concern, and what are some steps you can take make sure it doesn’t happen to you?  Continue reading

Holiday cookout tips that won't scorch your budget

Memorial Day weekend holds a steep tradition of family gatherings, playing outside and smoking meat on the grill.

What better way to welcome summer than having a cookout everyone can enjoy? The following are some easy, frugal ways to ensure your festivities won't burn a hole in your budget:

  • Make your cookout potluck. Ask everyone to bring something for the meal. But instead of having everyone bring a side dish, encourage them to bring their own meat to grill. It’s a fun way to add variety to your menu without breaking the bank. Get more out of your meat – and your dollar.
  • Get more from your beef. The best trick for making more burgers with your beef is to simply add egg and bread crumbs prior to grilling. This do-it-yourself method is also more cost-effective than buying pre-made patties.
  • Try unconventional foods. Instead of feasting on the traditional burger and hot dog, try something different. Check out your local grocery store’s circular and make note of the food that’s on sale. Search for creative recipes that incorporate less-expensive food.
  • Serve more sides. Stock up on side dishes — like baked beans — which are a filling source of protein (and a cookout favorite), but will be less expensive than the meat. You can even bulk it up by adding some hot dogs to the baked beans (a childhood favorite!) and it will become a more substantial part of your meal.
  • Download the free Cheap Eats eBook. Get valuable tips that can save you money on food year-round. You can browse more frugal foodie tips and get some delicious recipe ideas.
Don't fret if you cooked more than you could eat. You can save money by using your leftovers to make lunches for the rest of the week!
