Ideas for (almost) free Halloween costumes
Meet "Lego Man" – an example of what creativity and cardboard can accomplish

By Kim McGrigg, MMI Community Manager

Short on money, but not on Halloween spirit?  Lucky for you – the best costumes require more creativity than cash.

Homemade Halloween costumes have been part of my holiday tradition since I was a little kid.  One year, I remember my parents sticking balloons all over my winter coat and telling people that I was the "Balloon Lady."  Thankfully, my homemade Halloween costumes have come a long way since 1975!

This Halloween, my husband and I are going to run a charity 5k dressed as the characters from the MAC vs. PC commercials.  I'll be going as PC, wearing one of my husband's old suits and some wireframe glasses while my husband gets to wear much cooler clothes representing MAC.  In case our costumes are too subtle for most people to understand, I made nametags.

Here are a few other costume favorites I've made over the past few years:

Lego Man.  Lego fans can easily transform into their favorite character using a cardboard hatbox and some yellow spraypaint.

Greek Goddess.  An old bedsheet for a dress and some leaves off a plastic plant for a crown is all that it takes to turn into the Goddess Persephone (or any other Goddess of your choice).

Cereal Killer.  I can't take credit for coming up with this hilarious costume idea that I made in minutes out of stuff I already had around the house.

Steve from Minecraft.  Minecraft is a video game that is rapidly gaining popularity.  The main character's mask was free and easy to make using a box and printer.

And don't forget about paper mache!  You can make a mask of anything out of this old camp craft favorite.  Masks I've made include a wolf and Sonic from Sonic the Hedgehog.

Tackling the growing debt problem

MMI's latest eBook examines the impacts of debt and outlines a path to freedom

As Americans are consumed by record amounts of debt, Money Management International (MMI), the nation’s largest nonprofit credit counseling agency, announces the release of a free eBook to help consumers understand the far-reaching impact of debt.

According to an MMI study on personal finance, 24 percent of Americans blame financial hardships for health-related issues such as depression, anxiety, and sleeping problems. In addition, 27 percent of Americans say financial worries are negatively impacting their marriage.

With the eBook “Managing Debt to Improve Your Mental Wealth,” the financial experts at MMI help readers explore debt in a new, unique way. By breaking the issue down into three parts, readers will be able to evaluate their own personal situation throughout the book:

  • First, readers will define debt and discover its affect on health, relationships, work productivity, and general happiness.
  • Next, readers will learn how to assess their situation through thought-provoking quizzes and exercises.
  • Finally, readers will be challenged to envision a life without debt, and then given the tips and tools necessary to make that vision a reality.

In addition to “Managing Debt to Improve Your Mental Wealth,” MMI offers a variety of resources in various platforms to help consumers navigate the path to financial wellness:

  • Consumers can attend a free webinar, such as Put your Debt on a Diet and Planning for the Holidays.
  • Read personal debt stories from MMI clients.
  • Listen to podcasts featuring client success stories.
  • Watch a video on the benefits of repaying debt.
  • Or go ahead a take the first step toward getting your finances under control by filling out an online counseling form.

“Financial problems impact more than one person – they impact relationships, families, businesses, and communities,” said Kim McGrigg, national spokesperson for MMI. “But making the decision to improve your financial situation can reverse these effects. And here at MMI we are committed to helping people realize their dream of financial security.”
