If you’re not used to it, investing in yourself may feel like a strange, almost selfish concept at first. But the truth is, investing in yourself almost always provides an amazing return on your investment.
Here are four great ways to start investing in yourself right now so that you can create a happier, brighter future:
1. Read More
One thing that all millionaires and successful business owners have in common is that they all recommend reading books as a path to success. Books give you power and knowledge to make positive changes that you may not even be aware of yet. You can learn a new skill, take up a new hobby, or expand your knowledge in an area of your life that you feel you’re lacking.
Whether it’s for your personal life or your work life, find something you’re interested in learning and read a book or take a course. Or, download the audio version or a book that interests you and listen on-the-go. There’s no excuse anymore for not having time to read.
2. Stay Active
Being a couch potato will turn both your body and your mind to mush. Increasing your heart rate increases your energy and your brain flow, allowing you to be more productive and maintain a positive attitude. And a positive attitude opens you up for new opportunities. Not only is exercise good for your immediate, day-to-day living, it will also pay off for the future. You’ll experience less joint pain as you get older and exercise can help ward off diseases of the brain like dementia and Alzheimer’s.
3. Relax Wisely
While there is certainly a place and time for activity, there also needs to be time to relax. Continuous movement and activity is just “keeping busy”, not being productive. Take a few minutes every day to calm your mind and relax your body. Enjoy a few minutes of meditation (the health benefits are numerous) or soak in a hot bubble bath. A few minutes of quiet time will help you maintain your productivity.
Enjoy some down time on your days off as well. Find something fun to do besides work or errands. Changing what you focus your brain on will allow it some much needed time to rest from stress.
4. Pursue Your Goals
We all have goals, or at least you should. Personal goals, work goals, financial goals, charitable goals – whatever your goals are, working towards them will increase your happiness levels. Many people put off big goals because they feel they need to make significant progress all at once and don’t have the time. But working towards your goals in small increments will get you there much faster than waiting for the “right time.” Break your goals down into small, manageable steps then get moving on them.
Taking the time to invest in yourself is, by far, the best investment you’ll ever make.
