Financial Wellness Test

Have you ever wondered, "Am I okay financially?" It can be hard to tell, especially when problems become routines and we aren't sure what's "normal" anymore.

If you're unsure about your financial wellness, take the following test. All you need to do is remember how many times you answered "yes" to the following questions.

Questions

  1. Is more than 15% of your income going to pay debts?
  2. Are you borrowing money or using credit cards to pay for items you used to pay for with cash?
  3. Are you dipping into your savings to pay current bills?
  4. Are you paying bills with money intended for something else?
  5. If you or your spouse lost your job, do you have less than three months' take-home pay in a savings account?
  6. Do you usually only make the minimum payment on your credit cards?
  7. Are you near, at, or over the spending limit on your credit cards?
  8. Do you take out a new loan before the old one is paid off or take out a new one to pay off an existing loan?
  9. Are you unsure of how much you owe?
  10. Do you habitually pay your bills late?
  11. Do you charge more each month than you make in payments?
  12. Do you use a cash advance on one credit card to make payments on other credit cards?
  13. Has a collection agency called recently about an overdue bill?
  14. Are you threatened with repossession of your car, cancellation of your credit cards, or other legal action?
  15. Are you too stressed out and afraid to even look at your monthly statements?

Financial wellness achieved!

If you answered "no" to every question, you're in great shape. Things can always be better, but there are no major red flags and that's a great sign that you're doing it right.

Take this as a warning

If you answered "yes" to one or two questions, that's a reason to be concerned. Not all warning signs are equal and the fact that you only identified with a very small number of the questions suggests that things are very fixable. But one small problem can quickly snowball into a lot of problems, so make changes ASAP.

You're in the danger zone

If you've answered "yes" to three or more of these questions, it's time to take action. Three problems may not seem like many, but financial problems have a habit of ballooning quickly. Debt creates more debt. Missed payments lead to bad credit, which makes debt and credit more expensive, which makes debts even harder to pay, and on and on.

No matter how many problems you're experiencing, there are solutions out there for you. MMI offers free financial counseling 24/7, online and over the phone. We can help you understand your situation and provide resources and guidance to tackle your biggest financial challenges.
