Consumer credit counseling center tips on credit scores
Today, most lending decisions are not made by an individual; they are made by a "credit scoring" system. Basically, this is a statistical method creditors use to determine your creditworthiness. By comparing your information to the patterns in hundreds of thousands of past credit reports, the score identifies your level of future credit risk. According to the MMI's consumer credit counseling center, some lenders have their own scoring models while others use a generic model from a credit scoring company. The most commonly used and well known scoring system is from Fair, Issac; they are responsible for your FICO score. Fortunately, you can now receive a copy of your credit bureau file and credit score from many sources, including MMI's consumer credit counseling center.
The names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses of the three primary credit reporting agencies are:
- Experian 888-397-3742 | www.experian.com
- Equifax 800-685-1111 | www.equifax.com
- Trans Union 800-888-4213 | www.transunion.com
The three credit bureaus are separate entities. It is important to know this because the information in their reports may vary slightly. Different creditors use different reports (or a combination of them) to determine whether or not you are creditworthy.
You can also receive copies of your credit reports through Money Management International's consumer credit counseling center at www.moneymanagement.org.
